Art-A-Whirl Catalogue Ad Series
I was asked by a real estate management company to re-conceive an ad promoting their involvement in the largest annual studio art crawl in the country. They had a reserved space on the back cover of the event catalogue for many years. Prior to our collaboration, it was usually created at the last minute. Eventually they decided they wanted a more organized process, and a more cohesive and identifiable identity.
We began working together in 2008 and continued through 2017. I spent the first couple of years streamlining and stripping away information that we realized wasn’t necessary to include, and helping them to define their voice for the annual event. Once they embraced the direction, it allowed the ad to become more fluid, more suggestive of art activities in the building, unique aspects of the buildings history and structure, neighborhood geography, and to express the most important feature, that their building was where the Art-a-Whirl Art Crawl was born.
Through our collaboration, we were able to craft and morph the ad series over time into something more idiosyncratic and effective. Some of the aspects we focused on were the following.
Birth, Womb, Reproduction, Trains, Planes, World War 2 Factory Production Location, Neighborhood Geography, NE Minneapolis, Block Universe Theory, Art, Variety, Artists, Individualism, Possibility, Community, and Memory.
